Tucson school gets national recognition for anti-bullying efforts

A preparatory school in Tucson gets praised for its efforts against bullying. St. Gregory College Preparatory School is one of just 77 schools nationwide that received the 2011-2012 “Model Mix it Up Award.”

This award is given to schools that are working towards fostering unity, civility, respect and understanding in their school communities. The school won the award with the help of a student organization formed this year called the Peace Ambassadors.

The best thing we can do is add more positivity to our school,” says 7th Grade Student Margo Cramer says. Margo is one of 11 Peace Ambassadors at her school. When asked why she decided to join, she said she knows kids can be mean sometimes. “It feels horrible and I’d rather not have other people, like my friends, feel down about that.”
Throughout the school year the Peace Ambassadors participated in different activities to promote new friendships. Among the activities was a Mix It up Lunch, where students had the chance to work together with peers they didn’t know well.

We know that in a school environment students do better when they feel safe and there’s a sense of well-being and that’s part of our goal here,” St. Gregory Counselor Kim Peace-Steimer says.
If you’d like to learn how to initiate a Peace Ambassador program at your school, you can contact Kim Peace-Steimer at ksteimer@stgregoryschool.org

Contemporary Home in the Cliffs of Tucson

A contemporary home in Arizona was custom-built to blend in with the surrounding desert and foothills of the Catalina Mountains.

This Arizona custom house is owned by Cary Marmis, 70, a retired real-estate developer, and his wife Fern. The home includes roughly 25,000 square feet of living space.A major reason to build the home as he did, Mr. Marmis said, was to create a venue large enough to host charitable events. He says the home can accommodate several hundred guests for a sit-down dinner.

Though the architecture is contemporary, “we really softened [the design] to fit in with the environment,” Mr. Marmis said. The design was influenced by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work echoed the kind of natural aesthetic he and his architectural team wanted.

One of the most impressive things about the home, Mr. Marmis said, is the views. In the north lie the Santa Catalina mountains, and from the south, the home offers views of Tucson.

The home was listed in 2008 for $22 million as a 20-acre property with a different brokerage. It was taken off the market in 2009 and re-listed in December 2011 for $15.9 million. The home is now listed for $15.9 million with Nikki Halle at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty.

Distressed Home Sales in Tucson, Arizona

There is a new emerging trend in the mix of distressed home sales versus non-distressed sales in the recent months. Distressed home sales have created an impact on the Arizona housing market.

A distressed property, or what is being marketed as “short sales”, is a home that has a mortgage which a homeowner can’t afford to maintain. Instead of foreclosing, the lender agrees to the sale of the property for less than the loan balance. Because of the lesser value selling price of distressed properties, it creates a downward pressure on properties values on surrounding areas. Purchasing a distressed home is more appealing for a home buyer’s standpoint due to the lower pricing, however the process can be more complex and longer.

Here are trends for distressed vs non-distressed residentail property sales for Tucson:

What Does It Mean?

According to the article of longrealty.com, “the data above seems to indicate that we are seeing a shift in the Arizona marketplace with a greater percentage of residential transactions being non-distressed sales, with conditions in place for this trend to continue. If so, it would be good news for the continued improvement of local housing including price stabilization and appreciation.

Strong Bond for Girl and Dog with Type 1 Diabetes

Tucson, AZ – Eight year-old Madalaine Hembraugh and her foster dog, Petey are living proof that the unconditional love of a dog can be an amazing source of strength and resilience for its owner. They each have Type 1 diabetes and have formed a bond that is helping to heal both.

The one-year-old Terrier-mix Petey came to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona as a stray dog. Petey was very skinny, and was barely alive with a severely injured back leg that had to be removed.

After months of treatment at the HSSA Spay & Neuter Clinic, Petey went home with Madalaine and her mom Dr. Karter Neal, veterinarian and Medical Director of the HSSA, to recover in foster care.

Madalaine and Petey test blood sugar levels each night together. Madalaine uses an insulin pump and gives Petey her excess insulin.

“It has really helped. It’s nice to have someone else who has diabetes living here,” says Madalaine.

When Madalaine was diagnosed five years ago, she was the only one in her school with diabetes. Today, six in her school have it.

“She is teaching Petey that you can live a normal life with diabetes, says Dr. Neal. “It’s amazing to see how they have responded to each other.”

Dr. Neal cautions to look out for the following signs in your pet as symptoms of Type 1 diabetes, which is most common in canines: increased urination, drinking of excessive amounts of water or sudden weight loss.

Founded in 1944, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) is a nonprofit charitable organization, funded solely by donations and the services they offer to the public. It does not receive government funding. It stands on its own and saves the lives of thousands more animals than all other agencies in southern Arizona combined.

The active and concerned Tucson community among new Arizona homes is the reason why home builders in Tucson invest in this flourishing state and city. Many newcomers arrive to live in the area where the weather and people are warm and accommodating. Dorn Homes, the most reliable Arizona home builder, builds quality new construction homes in Tucson that contribute to the overall living experience.

Tucson Resident Exhibits Bravery by Taking Down Accused Thief

Tucson, AZ – Monday, January 30, Tucson resident William Sponaas took down a thief outside of the Big Lots store.

Sponaas says he saw a man trying to get away after stealing a shopping cart full of socks. While he was busy chasing after the bad guy, his daughter Mariah was back at the car calling for 911.

The two made their way across the intersection weaving through strip malls. About an hour later, Sponaas took the guy down when he tried to push Sponaas into traffic.

“I tripped his feet from underneath him and grabbed the back of his ankles and held him down,” described Sponaas.

Eventually police showed up and arrested the guy. The whole event lasted an hour. It was an exhausting experience for Sponaas, but he says he would do it again.

Trailhead named in honor of Gabe Zimmerman

Tucson AZ – A special ceremony was held on January 4th to mark the naming of the Gabe Zimmerman Davidson Canyon Trail head, in honor of the January 8th shooting victim Gabe Zimmerman. The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously back in February to name the trailhead for 30-year-old Zimmerman.

Zimmerman and his mother, Emily Nottingham, were members of the Arizona Trail Association. To pay tribute to Zimmerman’s contributions, the association put in the request for the trailhead to be named after him. Family, friends and colleagues who attended the ceremony all agree that Gabe would have been honored because he adored being in the outdoors.

“This is a really special place and I think it’s a terrific idea to have trailhead named after Gabe here. Gabe was all about connecting people with one another and himself,” Emily Nottingham said.
The Arizona Trail Association said they’ve been working to add signs and other tribute areas for Zimmerman and the other January 8th victims.

The sense of community is truly alive in Tucson. Residents are assured that they can fall back on friends and family even in the face of tragedies like last year’s shooting. Tucson Weekly’s local heroes named

Charlie Spillar, who blogs online at Tucsoncitizen.com as “Artistic Tucson”, was just named one of 10 “local heroes” in the Tucson Weekly’s Dec 22-28 issue. Charlie was praised for his leadership in helping save the unusual Valley of the Moon; in finding new homes for the Magic Carpet Golf statues after that entertainment venue closed; and in fighting to retain a drive-in theater in Tucson when the De Anza Drive-In Theater was closed. Charlie is indeed passionate about art and its preservation. His own whimsical bird sculptures are unique and attractive.

Another local hero mentioned in the Weekly article is Patricia Maisch, who wrestled a gun clip away from Jared Loughner on January 8, 2011. She is now a spokesperson for Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which advocates for tighter background checks on people who purchase guns.

She is also honored as one of AARP Magazine’s “The Daring Dozen” in their December 2011/January 2012 issue. The 12 American individuals are recognized as people who use “their energy, creativity and passion to make the world a better place.” Apart from Patricia, Arizona shooting heroes Ret. Army Col. Bill Badger and Roger Salzgeber are honored for their acts of physically bringing armed Loughner down to the ground at the NW Safeway.

A tribute to one of these “daring dozen” was given to Hawaiian U.S. Senator Dan Inouye, now President Pro Tempore, who is committed to “common courtesy” as a “Chief Compromiser”. The Senator has served in the U.S. Senate since Hawaii’s statehood in 1959.

Tucson is proud of residents like Charlie and Patricia. The communities and homes in Tucson are truly dedicated to preserving culture and to upholding peace in the neighborhoods. This is one of the reasons why many people are interested in living in Tucson.
