Tubac Celebrates Autism Charity Golf Classic

This year’s celebration of the Autism Charity Golf Classic was held at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa where the Tucson Autism Community Center (TACC) was chosen to host the event last May 5, 2012. The proceeds of the event went go to the Tucson Alliance for Autism (TAFA).

Rodney Peete, former NFL quarterback and author of the book ‘Not My Boy! A Father, A Son and One Family’s Journey with Autism’, attended the event with his son, RJ. “I was very excited to be a part of the TACC Golf Tournament and was impressed with the hospitality I received at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa.” Peete said.

For this year’s competition, another father and son stepped up – Randy Blunt and his son, Tyler.
Last year, they participated in the ‘What’s Your Major’ contest by submitting his story in a form of essay describing why the Autism Charity Classic meant so much to him and his son. Blunt knew the Autism Charity Classic would be the perfect timing to share his compelling story. Many indeed submitted their essays but Blunt and his son won the 3rd place. His prize includes a set of Callaway golf clubs, a backyard putting green from SYNLawn Golf and private lessons from short game legend Dave Pelz at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa. Upon winning the contest, he then saw their potential to win again this year and get the Championship of the short game legend by Dave Pelz.

The Co-founders of both TACC and TAFA were Ron and Angela Canale. They have a beautiful 14 year old daughter who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. They helped create TACC and TAFA as a result of the many challenges they faced when trying to obtain information about services available in the Tucson community for those affected by autism.

“The goal of this tournament is to raise money to help families and children who are affected by autism,” Ron Canale said. “Just as important is to raise awareness. That is why we get so excited when people like Rodney Peete, Dave Pelz and Randy Blunt get involved because they help bring attention about autism to the forefront.”

The Autism Charity Classic Golf Tournament is held every year at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa, known for its hospitality, luxurious Hacienda style and 27-hole championship golf course made famous by the movie, Tin Cup. The resort is located just 35 minutes outside of Tucson, Arizona.

With Tubac community being hospitable and sensitive to the needs of their people, what is there not to love about Tubac? Tucson school gets national recognition for anti-bullying efforts

A preparatory school in Tucson gets praised for its efforts against bullying. St. Gregory College Preparatory School is one of just 77 schools nationwide that received the 2011-2012 “Model Mix it Up Award.”

This award is given to schools that are working towards fostering unity, civility, respect and understanding in their school communities. The school won the award with the help of a student organization formed this year called the Peace Ambassadors.

The best thing we can do is add more positivity to our school,” says 7th Grade Student Margo Cramer says. Margo is one of 11 Peace Ambassadors at her school. When asked why she decided to join, she said she knows kids can be mean sometimes. “It feels horrible and I’d rather not have other people, like my friends, feel down about that.”
Throughout the school year the Peace Ambassadors participated in different activities to promote new friendships. Among the activities was a Mix It up Lunch, where students had the chance to work together with peers they didn’t know well.

We know that in a school environment students do better when they feel safe and there’s a sense of well-being and that’s part of our goal here,” St. Gregory Counselor Kim Peace-Steimer says.
If you’d like to learn how to initiate a Peace Ambassador program at your school, you can contact Kim Peace-Steimer at ksteimer@stgregoryschool.org

Prescott Animal Hospital Honored with Employer Champion Award

The Prescott Animal Hospital received the Employer Champion Award during the Passport to Prosperity’s 2012 Cooperative Education Employer’s Excellence Awards held at the North Grenville Municipal Centre in Kemptville last Wednesday, April 11, 2012.

For almost 25 years, Arizona’s Prescott Animal Hospital has been supporting the cooperative education of the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. The clinic has offered the students real-world work experiences including the ability to accompany veterinarians on service calls, prepare surgical instruments in the operating room, as well as assisting staff members when animals are brought to the clinic for treatment.

The Passport to Prosperity program, administered by the Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training, rewards businesses and organizations within the western regions of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) and the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) who have given their best efforts in creating valuable and real-world cooperative education placements for students.

Dr. Jerome Billett, a co-owner of the business and also a veterinarian who hosted the cooperative education, overwhelmingly expressed his thoughts saying, “It’s a tremendous honor to receive an award for something we do because we want to do it – it’s a win-win situation for us”. Billett also added, “This real world experience helps them (students) make some of the most important decision in their young lives.”

During the event, a Grade 12 coop student named Brandie-Lee Cullen of the South Grenville District High School talked about how significant the experience was for her – for she loved working with animals and when she was placed with the Prescott Animal Hospital, she knew that this is the career she would want to pursue.

Contemporary Home in the Cliffs of Tucson

A contemporary home in Arizona was custom-built to blend in with the surrounding desert and foothills of the Catalina Mountains.

new homes Arizona

This Arizona custom house is owned by Cary Marmis, 70, a retired real-estate developer, and his wife Fern. The home includes roughly 25,000 square feet of living space.A major reason to build the home as he did, Mr. Marmis said, was to create a venue large enough to host charitable events. He says the home can accommodate several hundred guests for a sit-down dinner.

Though the architecture is contemporary, “we really softened [the design] to fit in with the environment,” Mr. Marmis said. The design was influenced by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work echoed the kind of natural aesthetic he and his architectural team wanted.

One of the most impressive things about the home, Mr. Marmis said, is the views. In the north lie the Santa Catalina mountains, and from the south, the home offers views of Tucson.

The home was listed in 2008 for $22 million as a 20-acre property with a different brokerage. It was taken off the market in 2009 and re-listed in December 2011 for $15.9 million. The home is now listed for $15.9 million with Nikki Halle at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty.

Arizona Housing on the Mend

Every Tuesday morning at 9:00 am, a crowd grows outside the Superior Courthouse in Phoenix as Auction.com passes out numbered paddles in an attempt to organize a motley crew of bidders. They represent millions of dollars ready to swoop up new luxury homes in AZ hitting the auction block.

If you rely on national statistics, local realtor Russell Shaw says you’re seriously misguided.

Part of the reason Arizona is moving faster he says is we’re a deed of trust state. Most other states, like Florida and New York, he explains, “Are judicial states where the process to foreclose takes place in a courtroom. When you sign the deed of trust you’re agreeing to the foreclosure process, which is the notice of trustee sale.”

“We just want to take advantage of a deal right now,” says Linda Klinker, a former commercial real estate appraiser.. “Our home is just too small for us.”

In 1990-1991, Klinker saw the housing market make a similar turn around, “I kept telling everyone, ‘This is the next L.A., buy! Buy!'”

Russell Shaw with Realty One says now is the time to both buy and sell new custom homes in Arizona. When home values start rising, says Shaw, interest rates usually follow, placing an added urgency under potential buyers to bid.

“If their idea of a deal is getting it under the asking price, my answer would be currently, don’t waste your time,” warns Shaw. “Almost everything is going above the asking price, because prices are still way below where they ought to be.”

“Particularly, if you’re a seller who is planning on buying something else, like a move up buyer, this is the time you’ve been waiting for,” he concluded.

Distressed Home Sales in Tucson, Arizona

There is a new emerging trend in the mix of distressed home sales versus non-distressed sales in the recent months. Distressed home sales have created an impact on the Arizona housing market.

A distressed property, or what is being marketed as “short sales”, is a home that has a mortgage which a homeowner can’t afford to maintain. Instead of foreclosing, the lender agrees to the sale of the property for less than the loan balance. Because of the lesser value selling price of distressed properties, it creates a downward pressure on properties values on surrounding areas. Purchasing a distressed home is more appealing for a home buyer’s standpoint due to the lower pricing, however the process can be more complex and longer.

Here are trends for distressed vs non-distressed residentail property sales for Tucson:

What Does It Mean?

According to the article of longrealty.com, “the data above seems to indicate that we are seeing a shift in the Arizona marketplace with a greater percentage of residential transactions being non-distressed sales, with conditions in place for this trend to continue. If so, it would be good news for the continued improvement of local housing including price stabilization and appreciation.
